This is for all WataMote fans out there, who are still waiting for that second season and need some good alternatives to the weird and insanely funny adventures of Tomoko. So, here are 5 anime that are pretty similar to WataMote.

About WataMote

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul 2013 – Sep 2013
  • Genres: Comedy, Slice-Of-Life, School
  • Studio: Silver Link.

Tomoko isn’t your average middle school student. Along with her best friend Yuu-chan, they’re both the unpopular introverts no one wants to be friends with. But that all is supposed to change now: starting her first high school year, Tomoko has given herself the mission to become popular and overcome her social anxiety! Sadly, though, it doesn’t quite work out as planned. She is still the same shut-in otaku with no social life outside the internet as she was before – even Yuu-chan is now what one would call a “popular girl”. But the year just begun: follow Tomoko on her journey of finding friends in the most hilarious way possible!

#1 Lucky Star

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: Apr 2007 – Sep 2007
  • Genres: Comedy, School, Slice-Of-Life
  • Studio: Kyoto Animation

The story follows…well, to be pretty honest, there isn’t really a story. But the anime in general shows Izumi Konata and her school friends Hiiragi Kagami, Hiiragi Tsukasa and Takara Miyuki living their daily lives and talking about a bunch of random stuff in a funny and entertaining way. And they literally talk about anything you could imagine four school girls not usually talking about.

+ Similarities between the main characters (both shut-in otakus)

+ Same comedy/slice-of-life setting (mainly at the characters’ homes or at school)

+ Lots of parodies and references

#2 Himouto! Umaru-chan

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul 2015 – Sep 2015
  • Genres: Comedy, School, Slice-Of-Life
  • Studio: Doga Kobo

This show follows the seemingly perfect high school student Umaru Doma. Not only is she is kind, friendly and polite to everyone she runs into, but her grades in school are also excellent. Everybody admires her intelligence and popularity – but they don’t know everything about her, they don’t know what’s behind this mask of perfection.

Because behind that mask we find the complete opposite of what she is in public: a lazy, selfish and messy otaku, who does nothing but sleep, eat junk food or play games. She leaves all the cleaning and cooking to her older brother, Taihei Doma.

+ Similarity between the main characters (both shut-in otakus, who act completely different in public than they do at home)

+ Same comedy/slice-of-life setting (mainly at the characters’ homes or at school)

+ Similarity between the relationships with their brothers (lots of arguments)

#3 NHK ni Youkoso

The anime revolves around Tatsuhiro Satou, a 22-year-old guy who dropped out of college and became a NEET with little to no social life. As time goes by, he starts becoming superstitious and believing in many conspiracy theories. But there’s one that concerns him the most: he believes that there is a secret organization called the Nihon Hikikomori Kyokai (NHK), which tries to spread the hikikomori culture. And they should also be the reason for his current failures in life. And so he made it his mission to escape this evil organization while being forced to confront his greatest fear, which is social interaction.

+ Both main characters are extremely antisocial and have to deal with social isolation

+ Dark humor and funny/embarrassing situations

+ Development in social interactions (the interactions get more as time progresses)

#4 Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru.
