Sword Art Online: The Mixed Community

The Sword Art Online community has always been a bit of a mess so let’s talk about that.

After the announcement of Sword Art Online Alicization and a spinoff called Alternative Gun Gale Online while also having watched both season 1 and 2 twice I thought it was time to share my opinion of the community towards this anime.

Let me start by saying I actually like SAO which has already got many of you grabbing your pitchforks and torches, but let me say another thing it isn’t perfect yes it is full of flaws like the pacing of the story doesn’t go well after the Aincrad arc, many characters are put on the sidelines (Then again it’s the same with Re:zero), the Phantom bullet arc was a little meh and pretty much most of the stuff that happens in the Alfheim arc is pretty damn cringy yet somehow I still enjoy this show.

Why you may ask, well, first off I am a gamer so obviously seeing a game like Sword Art Online being created in real life is something I dearly dream of, but it has mainly to do with the concept of the show: players getting trapped in a game who have to complete 100 levels to escape and if they die they die for real. I mean, that’s a show which sells for me. The trouble most people have with this is that they escape halfway through season 1, which I will admit is pretty damn stupid and everything else after this was a mixed bag although the Mother Rosario arc was pretty damn good which leads me to the other subject people really don’t or do like about this show, and that is the characters. Okay, yes, many of the characters like Klein, Lisbeth, Silica, and Agil are put on the sidelines while Kirito, Asuna, Yui, Suguha and Sinon get most of the screentime.

For some reason this doesn’t annoy me as much as everybody else because at least the show sorta gives a reason for why they are on the sidelines whereas another anime like this one called Re:zero, which is still a good anime does the complete opposite because there are some characters like Ram, Felt, Roswaal, Reinhard and many more who are just sent away for no reason. Hell, at least SAO had the Excalibur mini-arc to make up for this.

The Communities biggest problem

Now, I’m fine with people’s opinions on this show like saying it’s good, bad, flawed or something like that. It pains me to say that there are some dumb idiots who just take it a bit too far saying it’s colossally bad or the worst thing ever in anime and if they say without reasons then it’ll just annoy. And, to be honest, it’s a little harsh because I have seen a ton of anime in the past year and a half and trust me, there are far worse anime’s out there like for example:

Eromanga-Sensei, Suzuka, Fuuka, Luck & Logic, Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records, Tokyo Ghoul Root A and yes, I’m even going to say these two “prepares for backlash”: Your Lie In April and Toradora.

Some of you may think my opinion is irrelevant now, but that is generally how I feel because I watched these and they either made me angry or bored along with a few laughs, but compared to these Sword Art Online didn’t feel that bad. Ok, maybe some scenes in Sword Art Online went a little far like that one scene in the Alfheim arc with Kirito, Asuna and Sugo.

So, to finish this up I think the way the community talks and feels about Sword Art Online is a bit too harsh. Especially if you just appreciate it for what it is then you might not hate it as much, but like I said it isn’t perfect and it is very flawed. But I just think it’s enjoyable to watch.

If you enjoyed this post check out my Youtube channel which at the moment is full of game reviews hopefully in the future there’ll be anime reviews which means an expanded version of this post and hopefully, I’ll be making more post’s like this in the future.
