After I watched the first episode, I was pretty positive that this will probably be my favorite anime this fall.
Let’s start off with the beginning of the first episode, which was the opening. And I thought it was great! I’ve never heard of the band “BUMP OF CHICKEN” (love the name, though), but they got me hyped about a slice-of-life anime just by listening to and watching the opening.
And then when we first got introduced to the main character, Rei Kiriyama, I got so many Mekakucity vibes – ahh, the nostalgia…
I feel like I’m back in 2014, when I watched the first episode of Mekakucity Actors and Shintaro was introduced.
This is your typical Shaft anime with Akiyuki Shinbou as the director – you can already see that by the way the scenes are set up and switched and the angles that are used to describe the emotions of a character.
The art is slightly different from past works like Mekakucity Actors and Bakemonogatari, but that doesn’t make it bad at all. In fact, I’m really into this style, where everything looks more like you’ve drawn it in a sketchbook than a digital graphic pad. And then when you mix it with Shaft’s art style – perfection!
I’m looking forward to what awaits us in the next 22 episodes and I’m unbelievably happy to see an anime with a quirky style again – it’s been a while!
